Who licenses contractors in Louisiana

The Louisiana State Licensing Board for Contractors (LSLBC) licenses and disciplines contractors statewide. It keeps the official license search (name, license number, parish, trade, qualifying party) and a public list of board hearings, allegations and penalties. Always check both before you sign a contract or pay a deposit.

When a contractor needs a license

Residential building contractors need a residential license for new homes or work over $75,000. Home improvement work between $7,500 and $75,000 requires at least a home improvement registration. Electrical, plumbing and mechanical work requires a license at any price, and commercial projects of $50,000 or more require a commercial license. Hazardous-material work (like mold or asbestos) has separate requirements.

Insurance a contractor should carry

Ask every contractor for a certificate of general liability insurance and proof of workers' compensation, sent straight from their insurance agent. If an uninsured worker gets hurt on your property, or your home is damaged, you can be the one left paying. LSLBC requires proof of liability insurance and workers' comp (or an exemption) to hold a license, but coverage can lapse, so get a current certificate for your job.

Storm and roof claim red flags

After hurricanes, LSLBC regularly disciplines contractors for acting as a public adjuster, asking you to sign a repair agreement without a good-faith itemized estimate, waiving your deductible, or working without a license. A contractor cannot negotiate your insurance claim for you. Never pay large amounts up front, get everything in writing, and verify the license number on the contract matches the LSLBC record.

How to use the violation search

Type a business or person's name (and city if you like) in the search box above. Results come from LSLBC's published hearing records and show the hearing date, case number, allegation and board action. No results does not guarantee a clean record, and a listed violation may have been resolved; confirm current status on the LSLBC license search.

Common questions

How do I check if a contractor is licensed in Louisiana?

Use the LSLBC official license search at arlspublic.lslbc.louisiana.gov. Search by name or license number and confirm the classification fits your job.

Does a roofer need a license in Louisiana?

Roofing on a home over $7,500 requires at least a home improvement registration; jobs over $75,000 need a residential license. Commercial roofing over $50,000 needs a commercial license.

Can my roofer handle my insurance claim?

No. Louisiana prohibits contractors from acting as public adjusters or negotiating your claim, and LSLBC disciplines contractors who do it.

Where can I see complaints against a contractor?

LSLBC publishes board hearings and penalties at lslbc.gov/contractor-violations. You can search them on this page.
